the oscar nominations came out this week, and YET AGAIN, i wasn't nominated for best actress in a bag store
they have no idea how good i am at convincing people to buy a bag that they already have
I know the Academy Award nominations have been out for about a week, but I only send this out once a week — so we’re gonna have to pretend we’re hearing about it for the first time (and maybe some of you really are hearing it for the first time). Anyway, the Oscar noms are OUT! And something about those noms is that pretty much every Irish person in main roles got one of those nominations, which is very good and grand.
Brendan Gleeson also got a nom, but there are only four lads in this video. Unfortunately, Mr. Mad-Eye Moody had to be excluded.
Another fun thing: all of these Irish buckos are first-time nominees — very good and grand, as well. Paul Mescal, King of Ireland and my heart, got a Best Actor nom (and in my unbiased opinion, should end up being a Best Actor win). If you haven’t seen Aftersun, yet, make sure you do before the awards ceremony. Even if you don’t watch the Oscars, sometimes it’s nice to see why certain people are getting nominated. And let me tell ya: yer man here deserves to call himself Academy Award Winner Paul Mescal, King of Ireland and Kerry’s Heart.
I’ve just discovered from my B*ggu coworker that she has no idea what the difference is between any of these award shows, so that made me think that maybe there are others like my B*ggu coworker who don’t know what the difference is. So therefore in conclusion I’m going to very briefly give y’all a rundown:
There is no difference. Just kidding I’ll tell you. The Emmys are exclusive to television. The Oscars are exclusive to film. The Golden Globes used to be just for movies, but now it’s for both television and film. They’re all considered to be great achievements, but I would probably say that the Golden Globes are sort of like the fancier Emmys — it can be thought of as a step up from the Emmys. The Oscars are like a step up from the Golden Globes. Usually, if you’re nominated for Best Actor/Actress or Best Supporting Actor/Actress or Best Drama or Best Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes, you have a very good chance of being nominated at the Oscars. But SOMETIMES you don’t get nominated for a Golden Globe, but then you end up getting nominated for an Oscar — like Paul Mescal. And I think when THAT happens, you must’ve been really good at your character. So just a recap: all of the award shows are dumb and are most likely fixed but they’re still honorable. And I love them.
But other than that, here are the Best Picture nominees, and here’s what I think of each of them (will update this when I watch the ones I haven’t seen — what! the ceremony isn’t till march! who do u think I am)
ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT
I haven’t seen it, yet, but it’s waiting for me to watch the day after I get my next booster and flu shot. I hear it’s very anti-war, which sounds great.
AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER
I have not seen it. I will not see it. I do not care about the Blue Man Group.
THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN
Martin McDonagh is very good at talking about the positives and negatives (mostly negatives, I think) of religion in all of his films, and this one takes the gluten-free dairy-free cake. So funny, so sad, incredible cast, unfortunately, no Irish dancing, but a gorgeous landscape sure makes up for it. Fun fact my class and I in college went to the islands that this movie bases its fake setting on and we took a little ferry there from Doolin and a dolphin followed us all the way there and then we all went bike-riding all over the island and the only food on the island was a fish and chips place so everybody ate greasy fish and chips and then we were taking the ferry back and it was super rocky and everyone was feeling seasick and trying not to vomit and then the ferry driver decided to take a long way back so that we could see the Cliffs of Moher from below which in retrospect was really incredible but none of us could appreciate it and the people started vomiting and it was pretty bad. So yeah, it’s a really great movie, and I think it has a good chance at Best Picture or Best Screenplay.
ELVIS
It is never mentioned in the movie that Elvis was 24 when he met 14-year-old Priscilla. Tom Hanks got nominated for a Razzie for this movie (a Razzie is an award for Worst Performace or Worst Movie or just The Worst). Austin Butler wasn’t bad, but (as someone who is known for knowing everything there is to know about acting) if you can’t get out of a role that wasn’t very hard to get into in the first place (do not try to convince me that playing Elvis is hard) and now have a southern accent even though you’re from California and were on Zoey 101 and iCarly and The Carrie Diaries, you’re not really acting. Method acting is so weird. This should not be nominated.
EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE
I mean … this movie was so fun. I don’t like that very serious dramas tend to be the only ones that win Best Picture every year. I know a lot of people weren’t happy about CODA winning last year. And yeah, there were definitely other nominees that were filmed beautifully and had great storylines, but it’s nice when a story with a happy ending and a sweet message wins sometimes. And this movie? It does it all! A sweet message, heartbreaking moments, very exciting action sequences, funny dialogue, and Jamie Lee Curtis. And a Michelle Yeoh Best Actress win would break Elon Musk’s Twitter. The Best Picture in my eyes, for sure.
THE FABELMANS
I have not seen this, yet, but Paul Dano is always fun to watch.
TÁR
10 seconds into any Cate Blanchett monologue makes me forget about anyone else that could be nominated against her. She’s a perfect example of being able to play a horrible, power-thirsty, selfish character and then being able to go home for dinner and be Cate Blanchett. This film was gorgeously shot and stressed me out. Worth at least one watch.
TOP GUN: MAVERICK
Pretty spot-on for a show that gets at least 15 million viewers to have a movie that’s anti-war and a movie that’s military propaganda up against each other. This movie was … fun … but still doesn’t make sense for it to be nominated. But alas, as Jerrod Carmichael said, maybe we can exchange a Best Picture win for the safe return of Shelly Miscavige.
TRIANGLE OF SADNESS
If you’ve never seen The Square, I recommend you watch that first. But if you don’t care, this movie is really fun and really smart. A great cast, including a Woody Harrelson cameo, and a bonkers story. The vomit scene did not have to be over 10 minutes long. It didn’t even have to be five minutes long. But we move along …
WOMEN TALKING
Just watched this one. I think it’s really important that this one got nominated for Best Picture, even though none of the actresses got nominated. The title is exactly what this is, just a bunch of women talking. But what they talk about and how they talk about it is what makes this story so powerful. I know that some movies purposely have you wanting more, but I truly think this one should’ve given us a little more. Very 12 Angry Men vibes with a stellar cast.
SO, I hope that gave you some info on what to watch and what to watch even though I won’t be watching. Again, the awards shows are not important, but they are fun to watch sometimes. And it could be fun for you all to watch and to get back to me on after. And who knows? Maybe this year, it will be Jason Sudeikis telling Chris Rock to keep Olivia Wilde’s name out his mouth. Or maybe he’ll want Harry Styles’s name out his mouth? I’m really not sure where we are in this storyline. But we have a little over a month (March 12th) until the show is on, so get your Best Picture movies in! And watch Aftersun, even though it didn’t get a Best Picture nom. And watch Decision to Leave because that was really good. And watch Puss in Boots: The Last Wish because that was also really good and is a definitely contender for Best Animated Feature. Antonio Banderas talking for a cat again? Uh, yeah, sign me the fuck up.
movie rec: I just went to see Infinity Pool, starring Mia Goth and Alexander Skarsgard, and I’m really not sure I should be recommending this one. Twas very disturbing. So I’m gonna recommend Women Talking. It’s Claire Foy, Rooney Mara, Jessie Buckley, and Frances McDormand. Obvious recommendation.
book rec: I just borrowed The Godfather ebook from the library, and so far, it’s so fun and easy to read. Already almost halfway through.
music rec: New album Honey by Samia. I have to listen to it again, but I think I liked it.
