did anything happen this week that i missed?
i feel like something crazy happened, but as a woman i’m not allowed to own things like phones or computers anymore, so i think i missed whatever it was that happened
Well.
Hello, everyone.
How was everyone’s week? Did anything happen? Anything crazy or insane or fucking wrong happen?
OH RIGHT.
I think our Supreme Court of the United States just overturned Roe v. Wade, and I think Nancy Pelosi handled it by reading us a poem and asking for money to be given to the Democratic Party. And I think instead of acting, the Democratic Party continued to blame a man who isn’t even the president, anymore. And yes, that man made bad decisions, but the people who are still in Congress and are STILL THE PRESIDENT are continuing to make bad decisions.
Speaking of presidents, what did the current one say in response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade? Did he say that we should stay peaceful? Did he say that violence is not the answer, even though the Supreme Court just chose violence by taking away a person’s right to choose?
When the news came out, my mom texted my brother and me and said, “I am renouncing my Catholicism.” And Sean and I were like, “…Is this not something you already did?” We haven’t gone to Church since our high schools made us, there have never been crosses or pictures of Jesus in our house, and my mom is literally a Gay Woman™, which the Catholic Church does not accept. It was truly more surprising to us that she hadn’t renounced her Catholicism than it was to hear that Roe v. Wade was overturned. Anyway, that was the funniest part of the day.
It felt upsetting and mentally and emotionally exhausting to be working on a day where our rights were being taken away, and we were finding out about it on Twitter. It felt wrong to be working! I was doing absolutely nothing to fight back. After work, I went to the protest in New York, and while there were 20,000 or so people there with me, it didn’t feel inspiring; it felt depressing. Because this was what Joe Biden asked of us. He asked us to stay peaceful. To basically do nothing. But if we could afford to, we would all stay home from work and shut down the economy. We would burn down buildings because historically that’s how popular rights have been secured for people all over the world.
But this country has made it so that if we miss a day of work, we lose. If we burn shit down, we’re dead. And if we stand outside of a Congressperson’s home, cops put on riot gear and bodyguards are hired for Clarence Thomas’s third home.
I don’t really know what we’re supposed to do. I DO know that we’re definitely not supposed to be dressing up in Handmaid’s Tale costumes, white women. This has all been happening to Black, Brown, and Indigenous women for decades, let alone centuries, so we’re not gonna act like hearing it from Handmaid’s Tale is the first time we chose to care about it. We’re not acting at all! We only started paying attention when we saw it was happening to white women in a BOOK OF FICTION. I also know that we should be taxing the churches because there is very obviously no separation of church and state. Y’all love influencing the law so much, then you can start paying for it!
I keep trying to think of ways to make jokes about this, but none of them feel right. It’s depressing to make jokes that aren’t even exaggerating what’s actually happening. So I think I’ll end it here.
Really quickly, in other news, the Vanessa’s Dumpling House near me changed their banner on their storefront, and they didn’t even tell me. More on that next week.
