I was almost gonna skip today’s newsletter because I’ve had no time to write it this week which is normal but I don’t even have time to write it today because I’ve been having personal problems. These problems include:
losing an hour of sleep last night
my mom was in town and according to my mom “your newsletter is not the priority when i am in town and so therefore in conclusion your priority is to take me to the guggenheim”
I’m just kidding — she didn’t say that. But yes, one of the main priorities of the weekend was to go to the Guggenheim. Now, on most Sundays, I write my newsletter. I hear you asking me (more like shouting at me) why I wait until the day it’s due to write it. I’d love to tell you that it’s because I have so many other writing jobs right now that take me away from my tru luv (my VIN — very important newsletter), or that I have been in so many meetings and have been talking to so many different continents that I just cannot make time for it. But the truth is that I am a procrastinator because it is very important to not put off procrastinating. I also love the urgency of almost missing a deadline. I know not to live like this for every single thing in my life, but I kind of enjoy doing that for this newsletter. But today, I almost missed it. Taking my mom all over Manhattan and Brooklyn in three days and then losing an hour of sleep and then waking up at 6 to say so long, birthgiver to my birthgiver and then going to a 9am shift at the good ol Warby Parker is hitting me pretty hard right now. BUT ALAS, I must write today’s newsletter today because it will be my final one as a 24-year-old. Next Sunday, I will be 25, and my writing will be much more professional and smarterer than this week’s, and it will all be very serious and there will be no more Cher tweets and I will only be writing research papers about more serious things like the stock market or Ticonderoga pencils. YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST NO MORE JOKES WHEN I TURN 25.
Anyway, BACK to business.
As you can see here, J.K. Rowling is living up to her name and keeps making all of these transphobic jokes on twitter! What a cool lady, am I right? As someone who grew up adoring the Harry Potter franchise, I can confidently say that I think it’s very weird when adults today are still standing by the franchise and the author. I mean, first she writes a Chinese character named Cho (Korean surname) Chang (Chinese surname) with absolutely no personality, and then she decides to stand her ground and let everyone know that her very negative opinions about trans women are something she desperately needs to make known. I guess we can agree that she didn’t think very hard on the character name, and she also did not think very hard on her transphobic tweets. We love consistency.
If there’s one social media app that I have at least 30 new notifications for every single day, it’s LinkedIn. Every day, I have a bunch of notifications that say that maybe 20-40 people have viewed my profile. Every single day a handful of homies are viewing my LinkedIn! My LinkedIn profile that has my entire CV, as well as my portfolio and newsletter links and references and a photo of me smiling like my job is depending on it. And then I wonder: ok so where’s my job? Where are the job offers? Where is the news and the media? Who is looking at my LinkedIn profile for free just to not respond to my applications or recruit me to work for their very cool magazines or other entertainment outlets? What is the point of LinkedIn if people are using it like it’s Facebook? All I see on LinkedIn now are posts from people that say things like, Like this post if you think interns should be paid; applaud this post if you think interns shouldn’t be paid. And then like 30,000 of the reactions are applause!!! And then I see posts from people giving themselves a friggin pat on the friggin back for telling a new young adult who is about to enter the working world that they just worked really hard and now they are Great Success! I don’t understand the LinkedIn. The LinkedIn is Facebook for professionals. And still also middle-aged mothers.
As I said at the beginning, I am currently dealing with personal issues (mentioned in the bullet points), and so this is going to be a short newsletter. I will end it with saying that I had a nice lil weekend with my mom, and we both got tattoos (which I will post photos of in next week’s newsletter when they are both healed). We both also took a tequila shot together, which was very important because it was the first shot of anything that I have ever bought my mom. We had it at the Stonewall Inn, which somehow made buying my mom her first ever tequila shot even more fun. Next time, she will buy me a tequila shot at a bar made for me. Oh, where is that, you ask? None other than the Irish American Heritage Center in Chicago, BABY.
Have a Happy St. Paddy’s Day week, y’all! May your heart be light and happy, may your smile be big and wide, and may your pockets always have a coin or two inside! St. Paddy’s Day AND my birthday in the same week? And it happens every single year? Such grand news!!
Sláinte, my leetle Irish leprechauns!
I have exciting news to share: You can now read Circle Back in the new Substack app for iPhone.
With the app, you’ll have a dedicated Inbox for my gorgeous lil newsletta and any others you subscribe to but most importantly mine. New posts will never get lost in your email filters/promotions, or stuck in spam. Longer posts will never cut-off by your email app, even though i get too distracted to write a post long enough to get cut off AMIRIGHT. Comments and rich media will all work seamlessly. Overall, it’s a dope as ~hell~ upgrade to the reading experience.
The Substack app is currently available for iOS. If you don’t have an Apple device, you can join the Android waitlist here.
